I hope your Spring Break was a relaxing and reflective time. I know spending time with my family has allowed me to re-energize and relax as school time has consisted of coloring and reading Dr. Seuss with my 9 week, 1.5 and 3 year old. After finishing one specific coloring session my son Paddy asked me, "can you send to grandma?" Once I agreed he quickly updated me "...I do another good one before you send..." This made me chuckle and then reflect that even a 3 year old likes to do his best if it is for a 'new' or 'better' audience than he's used to (our fridge with 1,000,000 other colored pictures is his usual destination).
With standardized testing season upon us I'd personally like to ask our legislature and the testing companies how they will help students find a 'real' audience for their learning. In our own building, how often are we giving our high school students the chance to present their best work to someone other than us, the classroom teachers?
